“Good colorfastness” is not an actionable instruction. A supplier or laboratory needs a defined test condition and acceptance rule. A practical requirement should include the following:
- Product and color: identify the style, material, colorway, wash, print, and relevant trims.
- Test method: name the exact AATCC, ISO, or retailer-specific method and edition required by the target market or buyer.
- Sample condition: state whether the test applies to lab-dip fabric, bulk fabric, a pre-production sample, or the finished garment after the final wash.
- Care procedure: align water temperature, detergent, drying method, and number of cycles with the care label and intended consumer use.
- Acceptance criteria: set separate minimums for color change and staining. For crocking, set separate dry and wet requirements.
- Approval authority: identify who reviews the report and what happens if the result misses the agreed threshold.
If the brand sells in several markets, do not mix AATCC and ISO numbers casually. They may assess a similar risk but use different equipment, procedures, and conditions. Choose one system for the program unless a retailer or regulatory requirement calls for another.
A Sample-to-Bulk Color Approval Workflow
1. Define the end use before selecting tests
A fashion hoodie worn casually does not need the same test set as an outdoor sweatshirt, children’s product, or performance layer. Start with the consumer use, sales market, fiber blend, color depth, and care label.
2. Screen the material and color direction
Use lab dips, strike-offs, wash panels, or early fabric samples to identify high-risk combinations. This is the point to compare shade, hand feel, visual wash effect, and likely color-transfer risk without committing to the full order.
3. Test the approved pre-production condition
Run the specified tests on the sample condition named in the Tech Pack. For denim with a wash treatment, this should normally include the final wash route. For a garment-dyed hoodie, evaluate the completed garment with its rib, trims, labels, and print or embroidery.
4. Review the numerical results, not only “pass” or “fail”
A useful report identifies the method, sample description, test condition, individual grades, acceptance criteria, and conclusion. If a supplier provides only “passed,” ask for the underlying values and confirm that the tested sample matches the approved product.
5. Compare bulk production with the approved reference
Retain an approved shade or wash reference and make sure bulk material is evaluated against it. Re-test when the dye lot, mill, wash formula, fabric composition, finish, or care instruction changes materially. A previous result should not automatically be applied to a different production condition.
